Giffen made a choice – move his ships ahead of the escort carriers in order to achieve the mission time line and disperse the ships in the event of a Japanese submarine attack – the problem was he got hit with an air attack

He made a mistake but you could see how he could have done it

Plenty of our Admirals screwed up during that part of the war.

But in the end the Japanese navy was a ghost of what it started the War with.

Between Guadalcanal and Midway they could no longer face the US Navy and when it did it got shot to pieces.

Yes he positioned his ships against attacks from Subs and he did not figure on a dusk attack by aircraft.
