I'm voting the same way I would vote for "best tank".
The Sherman and T-34 were quality tanks, produced in large quantities, reliable and win the war.
Therefore the B-17.

My vote for the Lancaster is probably biased since my dad flew in them. But it had a much larger bomb load than the B17 and B24 and operated for a longer period than the B29. That said my dad always thought that he B17 was the best looking bomber and really admired its strength.

'Best' should only really be used when comparing like with like. American bombers were designed with different tactical ideas to British ones and both served their designed aims very well.

Like Vigilant it is difficult to vote for other than the 'Lanc' as my late father-in-law won his DFC in one.

While the B-29 was a fantastic aircraft it entered service late in the war after a $3 USD billion dollar R&D program (more than a billion dollars more than the Manhatten project) my vote goes to the Lancaster – for usual haul bomb loads, the B-29 could carry 12,000 lb of bombs while the Lancaster carried 14,000 lb – and the B-17, beautiful as it was (and I still fondly remember building model B-17s from the 12 O'Clock High kit as a kid) the usual bomb load was 4,500 lb

I had to vote for the B17 as my dad was a top turret gunner and flight engineer in the 8th Air Force.

B-29 is obviously the best. Favorite or one that had the most impact is a different question.

Mithmee25 Jun 2018 12:31 p.m. PST

True

This poll was on which one was the "Best" and hands down that would be the B-29.

Most favorite would have been the B-17.

True the Lancaster might have been able to carry more there were reasons why it flew night missions.

Vigilant26 Jun 2018 7:40 a.m. PST

Just for information Lancasters also flew daylight missions, but the RAF had learnt that doing so without massive amounts of protection was suicidal on long trips. Most daylights were confined to coastal sites such as D-Day support and V1 sites. Dad did a few of these and hated them, as he said you could see what was happening to other aircraft!

Good, the B-29 is far ahead. I was a little worried. The plane that ended the war and went on to serve in Korea.

Lancaster as per Vigilant and Frederick.
