It seems there are quite a few hobby-related blogs and websites (not commercial websites) that use the ubiquitous "Ads by Google" banner/links in their website. I don't use one at my WeeToySoldiers.com, and probably never will (for starters, I've yet to see a site where it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb) (then again, maybe that's the point--if an ad blends in seamlessly with the rest of the site, then it's not very noticeable, and thus not a very good design, is it?). But I was curious: For those of you who use it, how effective is it? Does it generate enough income for you to make it worthwhile?

It pays for the hosting, which is a requirement laid out by the Mrs. If I want to keep the site, it's got to pay for itself.

I think I could make more with banners like the ones run here at TMP, but I'd have to recruit advertisers and do billing and such …

As above, it pays for the hosting.

I don't find them all that distracting compared to ads like True and the other dating ones.

From the other perspective:

We paid to have Gutshot AdWords listed elsewhere and it just never paid for itself, so we canceled them.

Yup pays for hosting. Can actually make some money if you are in the correct field. But them not that I would admit it but a do hear that some people conisder them to be the same as a donation button on your website. You see what you like on the site? You go look at an ad. Guy gets a few cents- company gets an eyeball.

Yes, it is a pain keeping off stupid ads, but it can be done if you keep checking what is being posted.

Oh, and PS- Google Ads DOES check to see if you put a note like "hey, just click a link above and we get paid for it"

they will be mean to you. They also do check that the owner's IP address is not being used to go click on ad links. Again, they will be mean to you. They kind of have to on that.
