How's this idea in the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) effort:
Look for signs of bread-making.

Yup. You read that right— bread.

It seems that the production of wheat, and thus deliberate agriculture, is sufficient to alter the nitrogen content of an Earth-like atmosphere in significant ways— indeed, at levels detectable across interstellar distances. And as one scientist describes it "Bread doesn't just pop up out of nowhere." You will never get accidental bread from natural causes. It requires intelligent thought and the ability to manipulate ones surroundings to a significant degree.

So with your next slice of toast, know you're helping alert the aliens to our presence.

Isaac Asimov once wrote (the man was vaccinated against writer's block) that the presence of trace methane in Earth's atmosphere was proof of life. In the presence of oxygen, any methane should be combusted. Yet something keeps renewing it.
Could it be …. Aliens?

"vaccinated against writer's block" very funny and oh so true.
I seam recall him writing about being on vacation at the beach… and he has his typewriter with him. And he is writing about himself writing at the beach.

Where can I get that vaccine?
