link This story is fascinating— one of Christianity's leading ancient theologians, whose texts are pretty much required reading for seminarians both Protestant and Catholic, essentially has something new to say. The sermons are based on the story of King Saul and the Witch of Endor, and deal with theodicy (the question of evil under a good God) and redemption. I would be excited to read translations into English myself. But setting aside one's religious persuasion (if any), as a story of scholarship and discovery, it's just as equally fascinating. Western Civilization was heavily influenced by this man— he's a pivotal thinker in history, a persuader and definer of thousands if not millions of other thinkers. What an amazing development for anyone interested in early Christianity's development, as well as the growth of Christian thought over Roman and Greek thought. |

So many "lost" documents. There's also the scrolls from Herculaneum. Luckily the discovers knew enough to set them aside for later technology. Some lost scrolls at Roman forts in Britain were shopping lists. 😄 But St Augustine? Wow. |
