I saw 'Supergirl' today and really enjoyed it. Rather than simply giving us a female version of Superman, it lets Kara stand on her own two feet. She's tough, flawed, funny and determined without feeling like she's ticking boxes.

The film has plenty of action but it's the character moments that make it work. Milly Alcock carries the role with confidence and gives Supergirl a personality that's very different from her famous cousin.

If this is what people mean by "girl(woman) power", then I'm all for it. It's about courage, resilience and doing the right thing when it's difficult, not about putting anyone else down. An enjoyable start to what I hope is a long run for this version of 'Supergirl'.

I listened to two reviews today that said exactly the opposite.

Also, the pre-sale figures are terrible. Looks like this movie is going to lose money for the studio, and was already over-budgeted for what is a minor superhero.

I thought it had a real "Guardian of the Galaxy" vibe.
I liked it a lot – what more can I say?

A review I read argued that its similarity to previous films is part of the problem. Yet another not-really-at-all-edgy "edgy" conventional anti-conventional superhero with an ironic fight soundtrack, out to avenge whomever while whining about how hard her super-powered "I can breathe in space" teenage life is. Yawn. Spare us.

Well, with due respect to the critics, I will listen more to Ochoin and what he thought of it. I may now go out and see it!

I had seen some middling reviews, which had said it was trying to be guardians of the galaxy – but I think now I will try to see it. Thanks to your enthusiasm I checked rotten tomatoes and it has a very solid 77% on the audience rating, whilst the critics are 57% – split the difference and you've got a solid 7/10 movie – that's worth a go!

BTW – hardly a minor character, there are various Supergirl headlining titles, she's a mainstay of the Justice League and has around 1400 comic book appearances. One of DC's most used characters.

Oh yeah, and a six season tv show…and the 1984 movie.

I liked her in the Game of Thrones prequel but not enough to go see another superhero movie. It would be nice if people read more history books and fewer comic books/graphic "novels."

"They" have announced that it's not for me. I shall honor that.

Thanks for the endorsements of my opinion. Personally,I don't rate my opinion all that highly, so be warned (& tell us what *you* thought after you actually see it).

I'm inclined to lean towards Shagnasty's views & most super hero movies I've seen don't excite me that much. This was, IMO, rather better than the average. And certainly better than the last flick I saw – 'Hail Mary' (sentimental, a bit childish & boring in places).

Parzival is certainly to be "spared" the movie (whatever that means) and John and his viewpoint are, as always, to be honoured and acknowledged.

See it, don't see it. In the end it's only two hours of your life, not a declaration of faith.

It's nice to see that the readjustment has taken hold and John will always do what "they " tell him to 😉😁

I am nothing, if not agreeable. 😄

But…
I simply do not like superhero movies. Easy choice.

All it took for me was her appearance in the Superman movie to know I would not want to see any more of her.

Tbh, I'm not liking the caricature faces that the "hostile" on line critics like Nerdrotic use.
One can make fun of the movie, but to use AI to make her look a ginger or blonde orangutan is beyond the pale.

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP02 Jul 2026 3:50 p.m. PST

It's the sort of "argument" you use when you don't have an argument.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian02 Jul 2026 5:49 p.m. PST

One can make fun of the movie, but to use AI to make her look a ginger or blonde orangutan is beyond the pale.

Once the actress attacked the male audience ("Christian dads"), the backlash began. It's NOT AI, it's the feral kid from one of the post-apoc movies. They're also saying Supergirl is poorly shot and lit, with no makeup, doing no favors to the actress, particularly compared to her previous work.

I'm NOT paying money to watch it. They don't want me too, so I shall comply.
The memes I have seen take one shot, and "orangutan-ify" her features.
It's as bad as the scrawny Elliot Page ones. Those are just cheap shots.

You should not attack her on her looks. She's quite attractive. Attack her for her dumb opinions. You have plenty of ammunition there. 🙄

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP05 Jul 2026 11:21 a.m. PST

Well, I paid money to see it and it was pretty good.

Much better than, say, the Star Trek reboots. More like Guardians of the Galaxy, but that's ok since there aren't any more of those coming.

It's sort of like "what if there was a Star Wars type universe and a superhero arrived…?"

Which does fit with Supergirl's vibe.

I'd watch it again. Krypto is super cool…

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP07 Jul 2026 4:32 a.m. PST

I'm glad you liked it.

Despite negative reviews etc, I think it is a minor winner.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP07 Jul 2026 6:10 a.m. PST

It's clearly going to flop in the cinema, it'll do fine on streaming.

I've got to say Bill you could do with getting some reviewers in your feed who actually like film as a storytelling medium. Or not, as you prefer. You seem to have settled on the Discourse Miniatures angry at everything style.
