I decided to try and convert the "Chatterton's Hill" scenario from GMT's "Battle of White Plains" as both our miniature rules and the boardgame are of similar scales. I thought it worked out great and we all had a good time. Check it out, link

Well done. Interesting battle— did you have any asymmetrical victory conditions for either side? Did you see the loss of the position as inevitable, or did you feel the Patriots had a potential to hold the position and drive off the attackers (thus altering history)? |

Yes, the British should and did take the hill, as in the actual battle. In most of my scenarios both sides have defined victory conditions. But VC on this was a little vague for once. I did it in the form of missions. The Americans needed to hold the hill as long as possible causing lots of enemy casualties and retreating in good order. The British needed to take the hill as soon as possible and taking it with as few casualties as possible. A plus for dispersing or destroying the Americans. I judge the results to be a minor British victory. However the victory conditions could have been more specific; The British have to take the hill by turn X. The Americans have to hold the hill for at least X turns or the Americans must have caused X amount of casualties. I could even have various degrees of victory, for a minor victory you need to do X and so forth. But without play testing it could be tough to come up with numbers. They may have been seen as arbitrary. For the Americans to actually hold the hill and drive off the British would have been possible if the British/Hessian players were inept or new to wargaming. Dice rolls are always a factor. Other than those caveats, I would say no chance. So you have to adjust the victory conditions so either side can win the game. There is a chance for the Americans to win the game but little to no chance to win the battle. |
