With just a couple of weeks notice West Point cancels honour for Tom Hanks. The alumni association of the US Military Academy, or West Point, announced in May that it would award Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, with its 2025 Sylvanus Thayer award, which is given to an "outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in West Point's motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country'". Now, the West Point Association of Graduates has canceled the ceremony to honor the actor just weeks before it was to take place What a petty thing to do to someone who has: "been deeply involved in veterans' causes." "Hanks served as national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial in Washington DC and supported the late Republican senator Bob Dole's fundraiser to create the Dwight D Eisenhower Memorial, according to the alumni association's original announcement." link link What a weak and cowardly little institution West Point is. |

Yeah, I'm just waiting for the"explanation" why advocacy for veterans and supporting memorials for those who fought in WWII is a bad thing.🙄 |

I've read that the explanation is that the alumni association wants to get out of the business of recognizing celebrities, and limit the honors to those who are alumni themselves. However, I would also think that Hanks' recent appearances on SNL were part of the problem. He made himself a polarizing figure and many took offense (including myself). |

It's pretty normal to not retract nominations when they've been announced – if you change the rules then apply it for the next batch. I'm not actually a huge fan of Hanks as an actor – but that's not what he was being recognised for. You'd hope that West point would produce people with a bit more moral courage. |

I think the administration had something to do with it. Trump rejoiced when they withdrew the invite. I agree very petty. |

Well, Hanks went on SNL as a 'Trump supporter' depicted as a racist… In a democracy, it's never a good idea to offend the majority. |

This honour didn't come from Trump. Is no dissent in any form from what Trump wants the new definition of freedom of speech? That doesn't sound much like a democracy. |
