I've been aware of this movie for a long time, but somehow never saw it until the other day. It stars James Cagney as Admiral William Halsey and deals with the short time from when he takes command of the naval forces in the southwest Pacific, through the turning point in the Guadalcanal Campaign. It's really quite good and is unusual for a 'war movie' in that there are no battle scenes at all. No archival footage of carrier battles or anything like that. It's almost entirely set at Halsey's headquarters far to the rear. It gets the history mostly right, although there is one large inaccuracy at the end which was deliberately made for dramatic effect. If you get the chance, I recommend it.

Saw it on Sunday Night at the Movies in the early sixties when I was 10 or 11. Quite an impression on me. No spoilers. I'm with Scott.

Agree with y'all except for the music. Somehow it sets my teeth on edge but maybe that was the point.

Have to agree with you about the music. As I recall, it was almost entirely a male choir singing something rather… strange.
