Some holes in the article:
1. Not all mosquito breeds bite humans.
2. Of these, the one which primarily transmits malaria, dengue fever, and other viruses is actually an invasive species in much of the planet, and especially the Americas.
3. We already have conducted "specicide"— deliberately. We did it to smallpox. It is effectively extinct in the wild. And guess what? The world's ecology did not collapse.
So I say, kill ‘em all. Personally, I like the bat idea— bats are cool. (So are swifts, which also eat mosquitoes.) But I also like the sterile male proposal for areas with dense populations of people and high disease risk.
I know that a group associated with the Gates Foundation has been working on eliminating mosquitoes, exploring many ideas— including lasers and "air blasters." Mosquito wings are very fragile, and cannot handle strong winds or sudden heavy gusts. So if you need to keep them away from you, use a fan on a high setting.
And I hate mosquitoes, too.
