It's extremely rare that I'll have a cup of coffee. First, it'll be just one cup, usually in the morning, and it has to be decaffeinated; afterward, I won't touch it again for months. Also, I like to have it during the fall or winter when it's much cooler outside, and most times with a breakfast item of some sort.

One of my many other hobbies is researching "vintage" menus from restaurants and diners of the past. A particular food item that keeps popping up is "Postum", usually listed with similar beverages like coffee and tea. In researching it I came to find that it was a roasted grain-based alternative to coffee and that it's still available today.

So, has anyone here ever tried it or consume it to some degree?

Thank you. thumbs up

My father liked it, after he gave up coffee.

For my wife, it reminds her of Filipino drinks made from toasted rice. But she hasn't had any in ages.

Interesting. Thank you for your input, Bill!

By the way, while typing this post, I subconsciously talked myself into a "cup o' joe" and a breakfast sandwich. Go figure!

My Swedish grandmother drank it all the time, and there was always a jar of Postum in her kitchen. I think she developed a taste for it during WWII, as she drank Postum as well as coffee. I tried it a few times but never cared for it, but I'd try it again as the last time i had it was about 45 years ago.

My grandma also drank postum in the afternoon and evening, after coffee in the morning.

Not a fan. Too sweet, and you can't really regulate the sweetness, since the molasses is mixed in.

I've not have rice tea, but barley "tea" (roasted barley steeped like tea) is pretty good. Nice, earthy flavor. You can control how you steep it. And you can sweeten it (or not) to taste.

Yes. Not the worst flavor ever, but there is tea, coffee, coke, pepsi, plain tap water. I would drink any of those before Postum.
