So, we have some empty seast at work. There are a couple of job postings out and a couple people coming … but it's slow. The seats have been open for a while.
I have a guy boming in, so a month ago, I had our admin call IT and check the currency of the computer that had just been sitting there. They came up and did a few updates here and a few patches there. Got stuff ready to be used again.
One computer had a piece of paper with a note in black Sharpie taped to it, "QUARANTINED DO NOT USE". OK, so I guess that one had been sitting too long unused.
Tuweday, I asked the admin to check on the quarantined computer. I joked, "Since they hung that sign, they probably closed the ticket." He said they actually did. Apparently one of my new people was getting a telework laptop and asked the IT chief about it (hard charger, taking charge of everything in sight) and found out there was no open ticket on it.
Now, from a purely technical security standpoint, the computer was fine. Being quarantined meant that any bulverabilities were not exposed to ro through the network, And of course, IT is only responsible for the technical operation of the gear, not having it in a state where womeone can get work done with that. Not one of their metrics …
Isnt there a saying ..? Sarcasm initates life.
