My PC can't handle this ACW FPS but its been really fun watching this gorgeous game!

Here's a sample: link

I keep hearing reenactors picked it up during Covid, and the thing isn't even really finished.

It looks good, but I do wonder how much co-ordination there is. People like re-enactors may be organised and serious enough to play realistically, but most gamers are likely to treat it like other fps shooters. At least that's the impression I get from games like "Hold Fast" and "Battle Cry of Freedom" (which looks awesome in trailers link , but is not great in action).

I think the holy grail of these games is to have the player as a battalion commander of AI troops. That way you get the scale of battle, but don't need hundreds of players. BCoF is part of the way there, but these games need some sort of singleplayer element to allow offline play in some form, or they die out pretty quickly. An excellent game that is multiplayer only is unlikely to stay alive long enough to be honed and improved. It does happen, but only to massively popular games. When its niche stuff for a particular audience there just isn;t that breathing space.

The video indicates it would be okay for portraying a company out on the skirmish line, but there doesn't seem to be any way to do battalion-scale close-order tactics. As clibinarium says, a game with the player as a battalion commander might be cool. Although the player would actually have to learn the fundamentals of battalion drill. Not sure how many would be willing to learn commands like: "Close column, by company, on the first company, right in front, battalion, right, face! March!" :)

I play this game and it is quite amazing. Not perfect but the designers clearly love ACW. The organization of your company will depend on your officers. There are units you can apply to join and some of them are very, very serious. They may expect weekly drill and some require their players to only use period language. As you might guess, those units are very impressive in the game and feel very immersive.
