The very curious case of Russian names for foreign monarchs.

That's not unique to Russian. And it's not just monarchs.

Proper nouns are the worst to transport from one language to another. In the start of the article, the author points out that different areas (across and within language bases) render Carolus differently.

Sometimes in languages that share an alphabet, people just copy the name over. And then grossly mispronounce it. But most times, people convert it to their language. And then grossly mispronounce it.

Our son and daughter both have names from languages other than English. Even though our son's name had a reasonably standard English rendition, he ended up with two major (and a few minor) different pronunciations. Our daughter's name comes from another language that shares an alphabet with English, but with accents we don't use. So we tried to spell it in a way a native English speaker would get it right. That didn't work.
