I'm a huge fan of the original literature and the movies. The Hobbits movies I did not love so much.

That said, as to the new tv series I was never able to make it through the Silmarillion. But when I heard about Amazon's intention to bring the Prequel to the small screen I got very excited.

The run up to the series however has been plagued by appalling reviews (mostly) based on the preview alone.

I was just wondering what the TMP crowds thoughts are regardless of your prior knowledge of the material?

Thanks.

One episode down, will watch # 2. As a series it is getting going. Pace is good, not as fast as a movie

I enjoyed the first episodes and am now waiting for the next. It has me hooked: what happens to Galadriel? Will she be in wet clothes again? Who is Starman?

Game of Thrones is not as engaging.

Do not want. Make up a new story, leave JRRT's characters as written. Bone laziness, I blame the writers.

Excellent! My wife and I both enjoyed it very much!
Nice to see a lot of the "creation myth" material.

I found the writing to be weak and the acting so-so.
I also found it too woke for my tastes. Amazon has suspended
viewers posting their negative views of the show. On Rotten Tomatoes viewers gave the show 68% negative.

Haters gonna hate. They need to stop reading Tolkien and get out of the basement. The way I see it, the Istari came to Middle Earth; but how? Did it involve pre-Shire Hobbits?

Well, as a big Tolkien fan for 50 years I SHOULD be more outraged by the outrageous liberties they have taken with Tolkien's story than I am :) They have pretty much totally scrapped everything from canon and have substituted their own ideas. It's not horrible, but there's not a lot good, either. I do like what they've done with the early ancestors of the hobbits. And the Dwarves are pretty much what I would have wanted to see. Elrond as the sycophantic ghost-writer for Gil-Galad was a little hard to take. Galadriel is…. well, a totally new character from anything Tolkien imagined. And when Celebrimbor starts talking about a furnace bigger and more powerful than any ever constructed I instantly had the image of a Han Solo Hobbit asking: "All right, so how do we blow it up? There's always a way to blow it up." :)

Having Amazon prime I couldn't see it if I wanted to, and I don't. What is the down and dirty on the Dragon show on HBO?

Sergeant Paper05 Sep 2022 11:13 a.m. PST

Elmo, get out of my basement… though if you WERE in my basement, you'd see I (while hating the egregious made up rubbish that is 'called' LOTR because it was easier to market a made up series with a familiar name instead of doing something entirely new) don't even HAVE a basement here in my tiny island kingdom. In fact, given the depth of the water table here, and proximity to the shoreline, I OUGHT to have a second story to retreat to…

I don't even LIKE JRRT's books, I find them long in the way Proust is long, just too much of a muchness, I much prefer the Harvard Lampoon's version of the story. That doesn't mean I can't dislike bone laziness when it comes to writing and selling stories.

+1 Sergeant Paper.

Apparently the problem is the Internet Trolls who have a problem with fiction not matching their fiction.

"The Rings of Power has been fending off trolls for months, especially ones who take issue with the decision to cast actors of color as elves, dwarves, harfoots and other folk of Tolkien's fictional Middle-earth."

From episode 3 it looks as though they plan to cram 2,500 years of the Second Age into 1 year of show time :)

I gave it the old college try but couldn't get through episode 3.

My wife (a huge Fantasy fan) quit after the first episode.

I only watched the 1st 2 so far and they are not that bad, I will continue forth.

Guess I am a Tolkien, hate what Jackson did and this I hear and read is worse

It just gets worse and worse. Mithril is essential to keeping the elves alive? Without it their souls will just evaporate into nothing? Oh please…

I seldom criticize specific films or TV shows because all art is subjective and I have enjoyed some really poor productions myself. But I saw this video on YouTube and laughed so hard that I just had to share it:
