A long time British character actor, he appeared in numerous films and television shows, typically playing an erudite gentlemanly sort— though often also a villain— notably in TRON where he plays both a human villain and his digital alter ego in the cyber world. He may also be remembered for his turn as Jack the Ripper in the science fiction film Time After Time opposite Malcom McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, where he steals H.G. Well's Time Machine and travels into the late 1970s to terrorize Manhattan.
He appeared in Babylon 5 as a wandering monk seeking the Holy Grail (a hero in this case, not a villain).
He had multiple roles in Star Trek, first in Star Trek V and then (as a Klingon) in Star Trek VI. He then later appeared in an excellent two-part episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation as an expert Cardassian "interrogator" sent to break a captured Captain Picard with torture. (Warner recalled that he didn't have time to fully memorize the script, which had a lot of technobabble, so many of his lines he simply read off a card held behind Patrick Stewart's head!)
He also did considerable voice work for animated productions— notably Ra's al Ghul in Batman: The Animated Series, among others.
I'm certain I've left off way more roles of note! He was always a favorite of mine, and his screen presence always took a show up several notches.

Wow. And here it occurs, exactly 40 years after the release of the groundbreaking movie 'TRON'. His role as the villainous "Sark" is unforgettable.

Looking through Mr. Warner's filmography, it shows that one of his earliest on-camera acting roles was on a program called 'BBC Sunday Night Play' in a television play entitled "The Madhouse on Castle Street", which aired on January 13, 1963. One of the co-stars was none other than the iconic American folk singer Bob Dylan (!). Unfortunately, the copy of the play was "junked" by the network, and other than four of Mr. Dylan's songs, this early example of a young David Warner's performance is apparently forever lost.

David Warner has always been one of my favorite actors, ever since I first saw him in 1979's 'Time After Time' as "Dr. Stevenson/Jack the Ripper". His distinctive appearance and unmistakable voice accentuated an already most distinguished actor.

Godspeed, Mr. Warner, and thank you very much.

peace

As nobody has mentioned it, he was superb in The Omen and iconic in Time Bandits. He definitely had a flair for menace, as shown not only by Time after Time but also The Island (opposite Michael Caine). He also had a memorable (but all too short) role as Abraham van Helsing in Season 1 of Penny Dreadful.

A terrific actor. I,too, remember his role as Evil in "The Time Bandits." After being thwarted by God he turned to his minions and said, "Tell me about computers."
