A year ago, Houston nurse Philippa Dianne Franklin Ashford was celebrating ringing in the New Year with her family when she was struck and killed by a stray bullet, allegedly discharged from celebratory gunfire. This is a tragedy that should have never happened.

To own a gun is a great privilege and an even greater responsibility. More than likely, the person who fired the fatal shot probably shouldn't have had possession of a firearm in the first place. Whatever the case, I'm sure the rest of us wouldn't have done that, inebriated or not.

Thank you to our local law enforcement for keeping us safe, and Godspeed to you, Ms. Ashford.

There's no shortage of stupid people out there. She deserved better. Spent a good chunk of last night at a large party that ended in a brawl with guns drawn by numerous people. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt and a couple people got to wake up in the drunk tank.

Condolences to her family and buds.
