My wife just got a job offer in Maine (we currently live on the west coast). It pays pretty well and would be a new adventure for her. But she's leaving the security of a state job and I have to start looking for a job for me. I have a question about houses in New England (and this can be ALL over the map, I understand). While we are looking, how much does it cost (and how much of a pain in the arse is it) to finish a basement as a mother-in-law unit (maybe 1200 sq.ft.? I guess pain in the butt is the real concern. Anybody done this? Thoughts?

Basements are very common in the North east. Maine is very diverse, ranging from outer Boston in the south to backwoods in the east. I think you will find housing vastly cheaper than CA. We lived in Bangor for 3 years and loved it. Winters will be cold, but summers are so mild that A/C is uncommon

Ooh, ooh. You can get Maine Cabin Masters to renovate an old cabin into a gaming retreat and we can all come visit!
