I don't understand why this is news. Our chance to completely contain it was back in January, place blame where you will. It's loose now, and it won't just go away. It took twenty years of universal vaccination to wipe out small pox. *If* we get a vaccine as good as the smallpox vaccine and *if* we get universal vaccination and *if* we keep it up for many years it will be gone. Otherwise it's here to stay like influenza, the cold, etc.

The biggest mistake after not reacting strongly enough soon enough was convincing ourselves this is a temporary problem. Our experience with the virus will change, but it's not going away in our lifetime.
