Researches have developed an artificial form of melanin which could block lethal levels of radiation. It could potentially be used in sunscreen-type creams, or as a treatment on clothing and other protective items. The idea is to use it for astronauts on Mars or other risky space missions, but I wonder if it might have usage for Earth-bound purposes, such as nuclear accidents, long-term service in nuclear naval vessels, etc..

Those are good questions!

Possibly it could be used to permeate a construct used around radiation? Just a first guess for expanded uses.
