I remember seeing an old black and white movie about British troops in the Pacific theatre as a kid on television.

Near the end, I believe, there was a scene where the Japanese were highly camouflaged and charging a British machine gun position in the jungle – naturally being cut down in droves but wearing away at the remaining defenders.

Does anyone know what the title may be?

If its the movie I am thinking of, I have very vivid memories of it. I was maybe 10 or so, I got completely soaked in heavy rain while wandering through a local forest (back when kids did that sort of thing). My Mum was pretty mad. I was made to sit in the rest of the day and had to watch this movie and I got really into it. I think the machine gun was a mounted water-cooled one?
An internet search just now suggests it was "Bataan" from 1943. American soldiers though- perhaps they looked British from the Brodie helmets?

Reminds me of a movie about Guadalcanal US troops in early war kit so British looking helmets. Last man dug his own grave & fought out of it.

There are several movies that had mostly British/Australian soldiers fighting the Japanese.

But this does sound like "Bataan".

Thanks guys!

I was quite young so it's possible they were US troops.

Yes, it was a water cooled 30cal.

I'll download the movie and see if that's it!

May possibly be "The Long And The Short And The Tall"…

Thanks Cerdic, it wasn't that one though. Interesting stage play adaptation though.

I think that 'Bataan' may well have been that movie.

I watched it last night and that scene is pretty close to what I remember as a child (although I thought it was at night).

I downloaded 'Back to Bataan' as well and will watch that tonight.

I don't believe US Marines or Army wore "early war kit". Bataan yes and that appears to be the film in question. Pre-war uniforms were still in use though. A picture of my Dad in basic training, March 1942, Fort Dix I believe.
