Not *really* weird.

Clever people don't try to travel with a modified passport.

*Really* clever people travel with modified passports and don't get caught.

Dopes travel with modified passports and get caught because they're not the forgers they think they are.

This is just an instance of the latter. But we don't have to whole story because there has to be a reason why you attempt this. That story might be interesting, and possibly weird!
