I'm looking for a book that someone here may recall. It was titled something like Small Worlds, published before 1980, and it was about people who built small worlds/elaborate models in their homes or basements. There was possibly a scale model of a large city (maybe Los Angeles) in a basement, and another person who built models of sites of religious significance like the Vatican and Lourdes.

One of the Small Worlds in the book was by James Hampton who worked as a janitor. He had created an 'outsider art' heavenly throne room in his house, using metallic foils from wrappers and other materials to create a spiritual scene.

Not "Personal Places" or "Naives and Visionaries".

I believe James Hampton's work is in the Smithsonian in DC, where I saw it about 20 years ago. American Art Museum?

Right, it's in one of the Smithsonian museums. I saw it around the same time!
