This man held up a blank sign to highlight the hypocrisy of his country's free speech and expression laws—he was arrested in minutes.

That, is an act of courage. Protesters in the west claim to be 'standing up to power' or risking their lives, but they know they'll be treated with kid gloves and released in a few hours. That young man could just 'disappear' and never be heard from again. My hat's off to him.

I googled around and it turns out he was not arrested for holding up a blank sign.

Mr. Sagutdinov ran afoul of the law by making the political statement that "there is no democracy and free speech in Kazakhstan" in a public place.

So that makes sense, then. Another irony-free arrest.
