…After their curries Simon paid the 2,857 baht bill on his credit card and pressed OK. In reality he had pressed 257,857.12 by mistake and thus overpaid the restaurant by 255,000 and a few satang…

That's approximately paying $8,000 USD for a $90 USD meal!

I had a similar, but opposite thing happen in Japan. I was going to put a few rounds of drinks and appetizers for my friends and I on my credit card – ¥25,000 which was about $250 USD at the time. Somehow it rang through to the credit card company as $25,000. USD My card was, thankfully, declined.

On the other hand, having your card declined in Japan is a serious social event, and I was a bit concerned, too. We dug around in our wallets and came up with the total in cash, then left. I didn't completely know what had happened until a week or so later when I got a letter from my credit card company about the suspicious charge that they declined.

I'm surprised you even found a place that took credit cards in Japan.
