Just bought a copy of the 1986 GW/WEG boxed edition (and my copy included a letter a previous owner had written to WEG, with Greg Costikyan's hand written replies clarifying rules questions. Neat extra to have.) It was a treat to see D. Trampier's classic character art again (I still have the original KotT somewhere…). The hex version certainly plays differently, and IMHO more satisfyingly, than the original. I did a solo two-player run through to familiarize myself with the rules. Quite fun, even as a solo. I quickly learned that the pinning rule has a significant impact. (Sucks to not be able to move anything because the previous player has advanced into all your occupied territories!) It's interesting to note similarities in the later GW Mighty Empires (the random "puzzle" hex map with each hex representing different terrain, terrain being used to generate specific resources, troop types affected by/supported by terrain, goal to build a costly structure). I suspect that K&T had an influence on ME. Looking forward to springing this one on my gaming group. |

I have the original, but have never gotten it on the table. If I run across it I bet I could convince the family to play. Some of his other games were a key part of my kids' childhood… |
