"We will see both Judi Dench and Sophie Cookson playing English born Joan Stanley, a Soviet and communist party sympathizer, who becomes employed as a British government civil servant, and gets recruited by the KGB in the mid 1930s. She successfully transfers nuclear bomb secrets to
the good old Soviet Union, which enables them to keep up with the west in the development of atomic weapons, and remains undetected as a spy for over a half a century."

I don't get it. You only watch movies about upstanding people?

skippy000118 Jan 2019 5:30 p.m. PST

I watched the movie about the Walkers spy ring. The damage they did cost us billions.

I turned out all right…

How do you learn to stop traitors if you don't learn from past ones.

Not at all but I am not going to watch a movie where they make out the Communism and Socialism is great and that shows…

That the West is Evil and that Russia and every other Communist country is great.

From the above link:

"I did what I did, not to make money, but to help prevent the defeat of a new system which had, at great cost, given ordinary people food and fares which they could afford, a good education and a health service."

Really over 100 million killed by Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and others and this lady believed that they were doing good things.

Oh and her beloved new system crashed and burn.

Too bad that she is dead now and that she can't see what her beloved Communists have done to Venezuela.

So no I will not watch this movie and I doubt that it will do all that well at the box office.

I'm going to watch this. I like espionage flicks regardless of who the "good guys" or "bad guys" are. They're historically fascinating and educational. Some of the best movies and shows are about foreign spies: 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,' 'The Falcon and the Snowman,' 'The Americans,' etc. And it really doesn't matter what their motivations are, or that they believed what they did was "right." That's immaterial.

+1 Mithmee I've no intention of watching it.

That's a bit of a big assumption isn't it? Why would you assume that in making a movie about a real life spy the filmmakers would be sympathetic to communism?

Did you watch Breach, the movie about Robert Hansson? He was an FBI agent and Russian spy and probably caused the most damage to the West ever. Was Breach sympathetic to Hansson's cause?

But thanks for the lecture. Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot killed people? Thanks for the heads up.

As for me, I won't see it in the theatre. I can wait till it gets to TV.

Mithmee19 Jan 2019 8:47 p.m. PST

What Hansson did was not even close to causing the most damage.

I would state that these individuals caused far more damage.

Aldrich Ames – Got many of our spies killed.

link

John Anthony Walker – sold military secrets for nearly 20 years

link

Julius & Ethel Rosenberg – At least they were killed for their crimes.

Yes a good or great spy movie are good to watch.

But they don't try and make the spy the hero of the movie and they they treat them as the traitors that they are.

This movie is going to make her a hero and not as a traitor.

There is a difference.

Your own Justice Dept. disagrees with you.
