"They had a rich uncle….."

Sheesh.

A unique problem when money is stolen from a school or school organization is that when it is "paid back" even a few years later different kids are there. So one set of kids lost out on the benefit of the stolen money, and a different cohort benefits from the "return". Very bad news.

And even if it's your rich uncle's money you're gambling with, if gambling is appealing then your vow of poverty didn't take, you still love money. Of course, that can only be my opinion, since that's a religious question, and I'm not Catholic, so no one should pay attention to that.

I thought they might pitch it as a Fundraiser that didn't work out:

"So Sister Lana, we'll take $50,000 USD to Vegas this year, and after we've hit the free buffet we'll go and clean up on the Blackjack tables. What could go wrong ?"

Sadly even members of religious orders are still individual humans and remain subject to temptation. And some succumb.

Not particularly surprising in a culture in which breaking marriage vows (among others) is seen as a minor affair.
