It explains a portion of the observed variance, but not enough to say that it's the primary driver of the change since that trend has been going on since more or less Babe Ruth's time. Furthermore, this explanation doesn't explain the sudden spike and continued new plateau that occurred just after the 2015 All-Star game. link
My personal pet theory is that something changed in the supply chain that juiced the ball, but is still within the spec boundaries set up by MLB. After that, you get knock-on effects like the flyball revolution (moving to extreme pull and uppercut swings), changes in pitching approaches (more high heat and high backspin pitches (if the ball is going to get hit hard, waste the energy on the vertical plane). |
