James Harrison has retired from blood donation after his 1,173rd donation. By good chance he has a rare antibody which can be used to counter hemolytic disease of the newborn, or HDN. The estimate is he has saved 2.4 million babies lives.

For the last two and a half decades I have been prohibited from donating blood because I lived in places with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (Mad Cow disease). The first time I was told "no" was the pint that would have been my 10 gallon pin.
