Linda and I took our 8yo Grandson to the USAF Museum in Dayton for the first time today.

2.5 hour car ride…got there about 11. First thing in the door is the gift shop….he found an orange NASA Flight Crew uniform he wanted….

We got him away from it and got into the Museum. The Early Flight area is under renovation…but I was able to explain about WW I aircraft and that the Observation balloon wasn't the Hindenburg……

We got into the WW II area, I started explaining about how the planes were now metal, not canvas. Told him about the Doolittle Raid and about the B-17 and B-24……

This took till about Noon…..and then the announcement came….."Because of the Government shutdown, the Museum was closing. Would all guest please make their way to the exits…." WHAT THE HELL!!!

One of the volunteers came up to us and explained that they had been ordered to close. BUT, they were giving people until 1pm to linger and still check things out.

So we quick made our way to the new Space Age hanger so he could check out some missiles and the Space Shuttle mock up.

2.5 hour drive there, 2.5 hour drive home….with a 2 hour stay in the Museum…..Thanks US Government……

We told him we'll go back again this summer……..

And he got his Uniform grin

Handsome lad. Hope he gets another flight suit in about 10 years or so.

What a good grandpa. Drove 2-1/2 hours just so he could spend 2 hours looking around. That's dedication!

Sorry I missed you , I was there at the same time. You should try and go back in May when they roll out the Memphis Belle and/or when they do the WW1 fly in (Dawn Patrol)

Seems a strange way to run a country….

What's the Government shutdown? Haven't heard of that in the UK, is it a cost saving exercise?

Old Wolfman22 Jan 2018 7:51 a.m. PST

Long time since I last visited there, myself.

My grand kids were able to go the the Museum of Flight in Seattle during NHMGS game day there. They had a great time and got to see Grandpa in his natural gaming environment.

Lucky for me none of them wanted the jump suit, but I did get them balsa airplanes.
