"One of the common complaints about Hollywood is that everything is either a reboot, remake, or sequel. Some of them are horrible, some are entertaining. "In a world" (to use a movie trailer voice) where Spider-Man can be rebooted three times in less than 20 years, with multiple sequels within the reboots — it's a damn shame that some great war and military movies can't get the 21st-century treatment. These aren't necessarily the greatest war films of all time, but by virtue of relevance or the fact that they would look vastly better today, somebody needs to remake or reboot them. Here are the first ones that need to be done…."

I do not want the current Hollywood to even consider remaking any of these.

They would just ruin them.

Redoing MASH, Breaker Morant, or the Dirty Dozen would be pointless.

You could do an interesting The Longest Day that focused on other parts of the landings that they didn't. That would be fine.

Touch Dr. Strangelove and we come to your home and make you disappear!

You could do a modern version of Wargames without any real issues though, and it could be a pretty good movie. Indeed, one has been in development for at least a few years.

PaddySinclair06 Dec 2017 4:25 p.m. PST

Yup, of those I'd only welcome a Longest Day inspired remake as there is a potential to broaden out and do more/better.

MASH and Dr Strangelove are of their times and should be rejoiced as such, and NOT remade (well maybe, a MASH inspired SF piece might work).

That list was BS. One movie that I'd like to see remade, though, is The Blue Max but this time stick to the book. Oh, but keep the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack. They could spend some time getting the paint jobs and markings right on the tripes and Pfalzes. CGI can work wonders now days, ya know. (Actually, I like the original just fine but had to get my 2 cents in.)

Sign up? No, thanks.

I'd rather Hollywood come up with original movies. There's a thought.

No thanks! Most of the time re-makes are not as good as the original. A classic is a classic.

Agree with Parzival, get creative, don't just copy. Wasn't a fan of MASH, either the movie or the TV version.

Yeah, the list is ridiculous. Movies like Dr. Strangelove and MASH are totally dependent on the cast of actors in them. No one today could replace Peter Sellers! And it doesn't bother me at all that the model of the B-52 casts the shadow of a B-17 :)

The Longest Day is a favorite, and I would never want to see a remake, Although I've often thought about how cool it could be to splice in some black and white footage from Saving Private Ryan (the beach landing) and Band of Brothers (the jump sequence) into the existing film.

And remake the Blue Max??? But… but… but… Ursula Andress in that towel….

Old Wolfman07 Dec 2017 7:51 a.m. PST

Or who would play Maj. Kong or Gen. Turgidson in any redo of "Dr. Strangelove ".

Tango0107 Dec 2017 12:06 p.m. PST

I have seen one of two remakes of the Dirty Dozen… horribles!!!…

Absolutely, but also, where would one find the modern equivalents of Kubrick and Altman?

I'll add my voice to the chorus. What was wrong with these movies in the first place such that we need modern adaptions and reboots? What's with the need to "fix" things that aren't broken?

semperrandyfi11 Dec 2017 2:06 p.m. PST

"Battleground"with cussing.

semperrandyfi11 Dec 2017 2:24 p.m. PST

And why not a"SPR"type film (showing not'the enemy'
but actual German Units )vs.the AEF & Jarheads.
A little over 5 months of concentrated mayhem
and destruction.
42nd Division w/Doug MacArthur leading night
raids with soft cap and NO weapon!
Patton & AEF tank commanders on foot leading FT-17s'
over trenches & shellholes…under fire.
USMC.."Retreat? Hell.we just got here!"

Merry Christmas to all of you out there!

How about an alt universe "Operation Sealion"?

I would like The Longest day remade, modern war movies are "too personal" sure Band of Bothers are great and so is Pacific, but you don't get these sweeping great things.

The longest day for all it's faults is a great historic intro to D-day same as Bridge too far is for Market garden.

I would love to see sweeping shots of French commandoes taking a village or thousands of soldiers on Omaha.
You don't get these "history lessons" war movies anymore.
Where are the Tora, Tora, Tora, Longest day and Brigade too far movies? That actually try and explain a complex large-scale happening.

DsGilbert17 Dec 2017 6:32 a.m. PST

Not really a reboot. I'd like to see Midway have an update to the special effects. Correct the planes, etc.

But we see that all through the perspective of a military history buff. Now look at it from the perspective of a movie studio. You would green light a hundred an a half million dollar "history lesson" on WW2? You'd be fired in no time. These are financial decisions with astronomical amounts of money. That's why you'll see Justice League 4 before another Tora, Tora, Tora.

Those movies sold big in the 40-80 period.

Sword and sandal movies was a no go for years, people said no no nobody wants to see that, yet now they are big.

Just because some idiots thinks it won't sell doesn't mean it won't
