I watched the new SF/Comedy "The Orville" last night and I was underwhelmed. While it had some interesting stuff (shuttlecraft instead of transporters and ships get holes blown in them during combat) it clearly could not decide if it was a comedy or serious SF. It tried to do both and it failed at both. Not nearly funny enough to be a real comedy, but not SF enough to be real SF.

The network is really behind it. The first I ever heard of it was a commercial during the game. Even the trailer looked lame.

The special effects looked interesting, but the characters and acting was way too silly for my taste, so I passed on it.

Production quality blows any Star Trek variant away. I was expecting more Galaxy Quest and it was more straight than that. The writing was pretty formulaic, but it had a whole universe to introduce. I hope it will be good, but hold on my verdict for now

Didn't watch it. Tired as all get-out.

I'm going to buck the trend. I really didn't expect much in an hour long show. I was watching it and looked up and there was only 7 minutes left. When time passes that fast on TV that is a good sign.

Some funny bits, but never running too long (like SNL skits).

The CG was first rate.

Looking forward to next week.

+1 VCarter.

Winston, you must not watch enough FOX….I heard about it months ago and have been seeing commercials for it regularly…..

jdpintex11 Sep 2017 7:13 a.m. PST

Same as VCarter. Good enough to follow for awhile.

I was pleasantly surprised. I expected crap. It was much better than that. Still feeling its way…I'll watch for another few episodes.

For a pilot episode it was pretty good. If they manage to build appropriately I will keep watching.

I'll second Martian Root Canal – those are exactly my feelings.

Looking forward to more episodes.

I was disappointed by the lack of humor but the CGI was impressive. Did anyone else think the "Orville" looked like a toilet seat?

15th Hussar11 Sep 2017 5:25 p.m. PST

Watched it, and DESPITE the commercials that were longer than the show…even on On Demand w/mute…I enjoyed it also!

It was not bad, confusing yes but watchable. few funny moment (the dog was the best) The show does not seem to know what it wants to be sci fi drama or comedy. I think the big trouble with the 1st episode is that we saw all the funny parts for the last months in the trailers and commercials that they fell flat seeing them again. Will give it some more time

XRaysVision12 Sep 2017 4:27 a.m. PST

It's rough trying to judge any show on the pilot episode. There's so much exposition there's barely time for any plot. Well over half the show was over before the conflict was even introduced. Since the conflict provided the foundation for the plot, this episode lacked any real depth.

So, I'll give it a few more episodes and probably the whole season. It takes a while for comdey shows to develop timeing that works. Go back to the first episodes of Freinds, Seinfeld, All in the Family, etc. and see what I mean. The sight gags were ok (the blue guy). The circular reference ("Ever try to get blue out of a white lamp shade?"). And the cast of characters is pretty good with potential for some interesting relationships. Now, let's see what the ariters can do for it.

There is a place, I think, for mindless escapism in entertainment. Actually, I think that's a void that that needs to be filled.

Seat belts! And the reason for seat belts in space!

I agree with Martian Root Canal as well.

I can't think of a pilot that wowed me. This didn't either, but it made me want to watch the next episode. So, for a pilot, it was pretty good.

Xintao14 Sep 2017 1:34 p.m. PST

I'm in for more episodes. Was funny, but I expected some more comedy. To be honest the blue guy had me rolling.

Captain Gideon18 Sep 2017 8:22 a.m. PST

I didn't watch it since I don't like Seth ******* MacFarland's humor,I did see the trailer and had nothing good to say about it.

I missed the second episode in favor of the Ken Burns series on Vietnam. Anyone see The Orville this week? Any good?

bandit86 Supporting Member of TMP19 Sep 2017 9:06 p.m. PST

2nd episode was still just Ok. a few chuckles not much more some times it is very serious so I am still confused as to what this show wants to be. That being said I think it is more realistic in how people behave with the little side comments being made and I will give it some more time.

bandit86 Supporting Member of TMP30 Sep 2017 2:02 a.m. PST

Humor is still lacking, low brow drug references (to be expected I guess) But they are taking on very serious subjects which was not expected at all.

Hafen von Schlockenberg05 Oct 2017 7:57 p.m. PST

After watching a couple of episodes, I'm dissapointed they felt the need to model Star Trek so closely. Firefly showed it's still possible to do something original.

Seems like a vanity project for MacFarland, who apparently always dreamed of being Captain Kirk.

Didn't we all. But still.

Hafen great point I feel the same way but I still like the show…Kind of

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP07 Oct 2017 3:16 a.m. PST

Well from what I've read Orville is more star trek than discovery.
Which is good.

bandit86 Supporting Member of TMP14 Oct 2017 10:08 p.m. PST

Show staying the same. It's ok. Hate continuity mistakes last episode a crew member had his leg from the knee down amputated , when they found the leg it was a full leg from the hip to foot, pretty bad

Xintao19 Oct 2017 6:46 a.m. PST

Bandit86, come on man, that was funny when Lt Alara hefted the leg over her shoulder. That was for the joke.

My take on the Orville, 75% Next Generation and 25% Family Guy.

There is usually one scene per show that has me rolling on the floor.
