releases the next Ice and Fire book, will you bother to read it? Since HBO has taken over and is finishing the story,is there really any point? I probably would, just to see the differences, but I'm sure there are many who wont bother.

I might. According to scraps releases by GRRM Sansa is still in the Vale, crying because Harry the Heir was mean to her at the Prom.
He had his chance to be relevant. Now HBO is canon, and the books, if they ever see the light of day, will be fanfic.

"Grr" … I wonder how many times he's said that to girls and then, when they look at him strangely, he can just say "Those are my inittials. GRR Martin. That's my name." :)

As many people who bought Book 5 will buy the mythical Book 6.
Book readers who stuck with GRRM before the tv show will stick with him now.

I'm sort of in between. I started reading just before Season 1 started and of course finished it, so I had SPOILERS.
Like Harry Potter, there were minimal changes between Book 1 and Season 1. Then the realities of tv took over and things began to diverge.
By the time Season 2 aired, I had finished Book 5. So I was expecting, among other things, the Red Wedding. I also began to hoot indignantly "THAT isn't in the books!"
While I waited (im)patiently for Book 6, the show diverged more and more. For tv reasons, some had to die for proper narrative effect.
The divergence became wider, while GRRM became crankier. The solution had always been in his hands. But he kept finding more important things to do than finish his most important story.
Now it's reached the point of "Just cash the checks and shut up George."

I would have gladly bought Book 6, had it come out on the original schedule.
Now, I have to talk myself into thinking it matters to me now. The tv show will end "in the broad outline" way before we ever see the semi-mythical Book 6 and the totally mythical and irrelevant Book 7. By the way, GRRM hasn't totally ruled out a Book 8. All he has said is that 7 is a nice number.

Haven't followed the series although I did watch the impressive conference to deal with the White Walkers. The arrival of the chick on the dragon was very cool.

Martin might have successfully entered the realm of the TV/Movie is better than the book--at least in the case of the 2 most recent books. I might read the next book just to say I did but I won't be rushing out to buy it hardcover.

I gave up on the novels halfway through Book 1. So as far as I'm concerned, the HBO series always has been canon.
