Thanks to The effort of President Trump it was announced today that Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics.

What a senseless waste of taxpayer money.
It would be better for the city to lose the bid.

Put a businessman and not politicians in charge and it will make money. It's Los Angeles so the taxpayer money will be wasted with or without the Olympics.

+1 to Winston. Hosting the Olympics is for suckers.

1984 LA Olympics had no governmental monetary support. No tax dollars were spent and after the event was over the LA Olympic committee had a surplus of 232.5 million dollars. The only other Olympics to show a profit up until that time was the 1932 LA games. I suspect that again the deal will be no taxpayer funds will be used.

$93 USD million stayed in the region, the balance went to the US Olympic Committee.

In addition a lot of the venues already exist so only may require some renovation and updating.

I can understand some of the comments as I think Canada is still paying for the last Olympics they hosted. Once again, don't let politicans be in charge. grin

So we are giving the Prez credit for everything now?

I think those apartments in Russia from the previous winter Olympics are just about ready to rent.

Los Angeles will make money from this. As T Callahan points out they did as well in 1984, thanks to Peter Ueberroth.

Doug Redshirt: "So we are giving the Prez credit for everything now?"

LOL. I thought that was the lesson we were taught these last few years.

Put a businessman and not politicians in charge and it will make money.

Oh you mean the same businessmen like the ones that caused the Great Recession? Yeah, right…

The Olympics is a boondoggle writ large. LA got lucky in '84 due to a huge load of existing infrastructure to feed off of. Easy to make money under those conditions. And it doesn't take a genius to do that. And there will be NO public money. If you doubt that, just ask the NFL about the publicly financed stadium they tried forever to get LA to build…
