Previously I'd rejected the idea of seeing the new film The Mummy, based on the terrible first trailer. But I'd seen the cinema trailer and it looked kind of maybe a bit fun. Maybe a 5/10 movie – which just about passes muster these days.

Now I've read the NYT review : link and they really slate it. The critic is clearly having fun. I did LOL :

She (The Mummy) "gets inside his (Tom Cruise's) head, which is awkward both because he's kind of sweet on Jenny and because it's such an empty place"

So, what to do ?

Maybe I can catch the cheap show at the local cinema and waste a little less money…. evil grin

Although….other reviews don't seem much kinder…

Another opportunity wasted on a "remake".

So many brains, but so lacking in originality that they have to keep regurgitating past titles with new "flavor". Ugh.

More of runty Tom Cruise trying to pass himself off as an action hero.

He does try too hard in his roles, doesn't he?

Critics decry The Mummy as Tom Cruise's 'worst film' yet!

I copied this from a news story, If its true the Mummy is one very very very bad movie. Because I think the last 5 should be a good reason he should find a new line of work :)

I try and ignore critics as their goals in evaluating a movie are different than mine. I'm just looking for some fun escapism. If the trailer looks like it might be fun I would go.

Wouldn't mind if Mad Magazine satirized it.

Fortunately, I belong to a "membership" theatre (Kinda like Netflix, but with a physical movie house to go to), so I get to watch all the drek I want for "free".

I doubt it will hold up against Brendan Frasier's Mummy 1 or 2, which were perfect popcorn flicks (for me).

From one of our local papers: "This movie is so bad, it makes me want to write a personal apology to Brendan Fraser for hating on his dumb-but-fun The Mummy franchise of nearly 20 years ago."

It is a great film – I have a copy to hand!

I thought the first Brendan Fraser Mummy was superb. Not quite as keen on the second, but still very good.

20thMaine,
True. The first Brendan Fraser one was good. Then it went down hill fast with the sequels.

Hafen,
That Karloff one is amazing, even after all these years.

I liked the second mummy too. Not as good as the first one but still good stupid fun. Of all the late 90s early 2000s blockbusters. The mummy movies are my favourite. Brendan Fraser is always entertaining no matter what he's in.

Good ensemble cast – and plenty of ramshackle kit !

I don't know what all the critics' carping was about. My wife and I saw it yesterday and found it very entertaining.
Which is what I would expect from a movie about gods and monsters.
Thanks,
Pat

I was unsure whether to see this remake due to its 16% Rotten Tomatoes score and the disappointing opening weekend it just had at the North American box office, but it made nearly $150 USD million overseas (over a third of that in China alone) so I will give it a chance.

There seems to be a wide gulf between domestic and international moviegoers as to what makes a watchable movie.

Seeing it tomorrow – there's a late evening reduced price showing….

The "Warcraft" movie proved that point rather nicely.

Well – it was actually quite good. Tom Cruise is pretty terrible, playing a "lovable rogue" who exudes "charming wit". Well… not so lovable, not so charming, not so witty.

But that aside….and that they use a big chunk to set up the new franchise they've invented (think 21st century League of Gentlemen and you're only one small lawsuit away from being correct)…it was pretty good. Certainly not the worst film I've seen in the last few years.
