I hate Alzheimer with a passion as it robs people of their identity and dignity before it finally takes their life.

Today I got another reminder of that. My uncle, who had been in a home/hospice in Puerto Rico for two years, slowly melting away mentally, is finally at peace.

Wow. I forgot how much I loved that old "judio" (that's what he wanted the rest of us to call him – and we did so with much affection). And I love all the non-PC nicknames he had for the rest of us too. :)

I miss you old man. You always taught me to be strong and to stick up for what you believe, even if you're the only one willing to speak up. You taught me your twisted sense of humor. I really enjoyed all the pranks you taught me. Most importantly, you taught me that in a loving family unity does not require uniformity.

A tender kiss for you, Tío Arturo. And thanks for putting up with our huge family of loud and crazy "Christians". The world feels like a much emptier place today without you. We love you. Shalom.

My mother has the disease now – she's bed ridden and in a care home. She's not really my mother any more, horrible disease, she just wants to die herself. You have my sympathy, but your uncle is now out of it – sad though it is to say it, I think that is a blessing.

My sympathies and respect for your heartfelt honoring of his life. Sorry for your loss.

Please accept my condolences. My mother and mother in law both suffered from it and it greatly diminished their and our lives. Your uncle sounds like a great guy.

My condolences. My Mother died of Alzheimer's, toward the end she knew no one but died at peace in my home.

He was always such a strong and dynamic man, with one of the sharpest minds I've ever known.

Sorry for your loss, but good to know he's at peace

It sounds like my aunt is handling it better than I expected. Better than me for sure.

Then again she was with him every single day until the end. The two were always inseparable.
