The Third Annual Up The Ten Mile Creek Classic at Gordy Wildlife Preserve (our home course in Fote Pierce)
Smokey hadn't had a birdie (NOT ONE!) in 2017, since moving up to the 50 and over professional division! That is some kind of record! THIRTEEN rounds of golf (4 tournaments), and not ONE ing birdie! Thats almost impossible! Keep in mind, I have NOT missed a putt inside 30 fee, EVER, this year!
You know how hard it is to compete when you never get a birdie? I'll tell you. Impossible!
So, playing our Gordy jungle course, pro (long tees)pads, first round. TWENTY SIX holes, Not ONE birdie! (I average 6 birdies on that course, but also 4-6 bogies from long tees)
I'm one over par after 26, (Just ONE bogey, which is way good). last hole of round, I hit a 50 foot approach on my second shot! A Birdie! Th nightmare streak ends!
Even par, put me in 6th place out of 49 players, going into 2nd and final round. (Its a nightmare course. Players better than me shot 20 over par, LOL!)
Second round, I'm on lead card. Birdie on first hole! I'm only a few strokes off the leader. 26 more holes, NO Birdies! I'm locked in a battle for 3rd with my nemesis, a Canes fan my age, who has tied me on the last two tournaments we played. I really want to beat him.
I'm at par, like him, four holes to go. I BOGIE the next three! (I was angry, you should have heard my language).
But, lol, so does he! Tied up, last hole. I have to make a 30 foot putt to save a 3 (par). He misses a 6 foot putt for par, I beat him by one!
Won a bunch of money, disc, shirts, a 1 ounce silver bar (its kinda small) plaque, etc.
I feel good. Beat a whole bunch of other good players (they are pros) and took 3rd with pride.
3rd is OK, right? No way I beat the winner and 2nd place guys, they have been playing for 30 years on the World level.
I snapped my no birdie streak! Time to train, and get more!
