Reading the book for the first time; so far, so good.

It has a typically crap King ending. He's only ended two novels well out of the c. dozen I wasted my time on: Running Man, and The Stand.

As a matter of fact, I gave up after The Stand. It appeared to me that he ended up with a bunch of characters he didn't know what to do with, and so just sent them off into the desert to die.

Turns out, that's just what happened--he admitted as much in On Writing. He'd decided, for no particular reason,to write a novel in which he would introduce a new major character in every chapter. By the end,of course, he had too many,so. . .

He also said he was drinking a case of beer and smoking an ounce of pot a day during this period. So that may have had something to do with it.

He needs to stick to the formula for good endings then, because killing off a bunch of characters is not de facto a crap ending. He nailed it. But Running Man has his best ending.

C'mon. The Long Walk, The Mist, The Shining. Even if not thrilled with the ending you hada be thrilled getting there! Just saying.
