Ascenceur pour l'echafaud (dir. Louis Malle, 1958) is a terrific crime film, starring Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet. The two play lovers who are plotting to murder her husband. Of course, things don't go as well as hoped; to say more would be to spoil the film. If you think you've seen this plot before you are correct; if you think you know where it's going, you are most likely wrong! Naturalistic camera work, beautifully shot in black and white, suspenseful as hell, dripping with irony, served up with an icy-cool score by Miles Davis, this one has it all.

Available on Criterion DVD as Elevator to the Gallows, released as Lift to the Scaffold in the UK.
