Just watched the first episode of the above. Does it get any better?

Clearly they have thrown a lot of money at it and to be honest, I can't really remember what the original TV series was like – other than nothing like it had been attempted.

A lot has happened in the last 40 years.

Feels like the first episode was designed to set up the facts around there being an established African culture over and above the old school (and totally wrong) image of all Africans living in huts like a 1930's Tarzan movie. Also the complicity of Africans in the slave trade itself for local tribal/political gain.

Not at all sure I remember that from 1977!

A small thing that really got on my nerves was everyone talking English with some African accent or the other, which for me just jarred.

The old trick of speaking a native language for a few lines and then switching, didn't really work when everyone sounded like Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America".

Whats wrong with the real language and subtitles for one episode?

Go back to Shogun from the 1970s.
The Japanese was in Japanese, with no subtitles.
It made you pay attention. I liked that approach, my father did not.

Hey, I'd forgotten that!

Mind you I could cheat now, I've acquired a Japanese daughter- in-law since then.

Her family were over a couple of weeks back. On reflection, I felt like Richard Chamberlain most of the time!

Amazing how little of a language you can get away with when you know the people you are talking to. Luckily, their English is at the same level as my Japanese, so it was all part of the fun!

if there are subtitles they will be blocked by the "running ads" that a lot of broadcasters are now using and that can't happen.. can it ?

No interest in seeing the "new" version.

Winston--another bonus for Shogun: IIRC, the Japanese cut out everything with Richard Chamberlain, and turned the rest into a two-hour movie about Ieyasu Tokugawa.
