RIP

Winston Smith27 Jan 2017 8:19 p.m. PST

This is one I can mourn as his acting career was still going strong.
What a good character actor and slimy villain.
Always memorable.

Too many great roles to mention them all, but his Caligula was something special. RIP to a true actor. Look at the talent claimed in one week!

I don't think we agreed on many things, but he was an incredible actor.

Richard Rich in a Man for All Seasons was my first memory, I'd forgotten Caligula. Alien, Space Balls, Hell Boy, all fond memories.

The very first time I saw any of his work was on PBS around 1976 in 'The Naked Civil Servant'. In the late-'70s, I saw his performance as Caligula in 'I, Claudius', and in the early- to mid-'80s, through cable tv, I was able to see a few of his many memorable roles in 'Alien', 'The Elephant Man', 'Midnight Express', 'Watership Down', 'The Osterman Weekend', and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'. This man had some serious talent, and he will be missed, for sure.

Godspeed, Mr. Hurt, and thank you very, very much.

A man that twice got an alien bursting out of his chest and lived another 30++ years.
Great actor, supper presence!

But we won't see anymore War doctor. ..

A true Thespian, one of my all time great actors, his portrayal of Winston Smith from the film version of 1984 was brilliantly pathetic. Step boldly on to the theatre boards of above sir, you shall be missed.

A great actor – brought gravitas to every role. And such a wide range of roles.

He plays a priest in the recently released Jackie – which I guess is now his last role – and he gave this part great depth of feeling. Superb to the end.

Great actor with wide range of talent and a big legacy of memorable work across the media.

His 2015 Knighthood was long over due.

Richard Rich and Caligula were my first memories of the talented Mr Hurt, and his unmistakable tones as Aragorn in the 1978 LOTR.

How come I didn't see this in the Neewz? Strange. I read the "papers" every day.

Caligula, then everything else follows. He's Neville Chamberlain in the upcoming film "Darkest Hour", posthumously, of course.
