One of the 20th Century's most multi-talented actors, he was well known on 1960s American television, beginning with his role as the shy English waiter "Alfie Wingate" in 'Make Room for Daddy'. From that he would later be seen in familiar and memorable roles as the good-hearted manservant "Malcolm Merriwether" on 'The Andy Griffith Show', the supremely bumbling "Col. Crittendon" on 'Hogan's Heroes', and the womanizing warlock "Dr. Bombay" on 'Bewitched'.

He was also active in film. He had an early uncredited role as "Lookout Frederick Fleet" in the 1958 movie about the sinking of the Titanic, 'A Night to Remember'. 39 years later, he would be cast as survivor Col. Archibald Gracie IV in 1997's 'Titanic', and he would also make an appearance in 1999's 'The Mummy'.

Godspeed, Mr. Fox, and thank you very much.

Watched Hogan's Heroes & Bewitched all the time. The Colonel and the Doctor were a hoot. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Just looked at his bio a couple of weeks ago – my brother's family has been watching Andy Griffith Show reruns and I saw the Merriwether episodes.

Was rather amused to see him quoted as liking acting as it let him play a lot of golf.

RIP

This has been a bad year. We've lost too many really great folks. RIP Mr. Fox. Thanks for all the laughs.

Same here. He also served in the Royal Navy near the end of WW2 aboard a minesweeper. Rest easy, and thanks.
