They suck the joy out of the music they are performing.

Case in example,
An old Irish dittie: Tá mo Chleamhnas Déanta
I first ran across it as a Chieftains collaboration with Van Morrison.
YouTube link
It's catchy. The tenor sings in Irish, then Van Morrison and Mary Black chime in, with lyrics that make me smile. I love it.
However… Search on YouTube alternate singers. Altan make it sound like a funeral dirge, and some old white haired broad sings it like the Sassenach are burning her hut.
They may be more "authentic", but sheesh…. Lighten up.

And then there is Ewan McColl. Cough cough. My God, that man couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and he's a Commie to boot. Good thing he had the Clancy Brothers and Dubliners and Pogues to sing his stuff. BTW, he's the original doofus to hate Bob Dylan for using electric guitars.

To sum it up, if you have to be a Commie, at least be able to sing.

I hate "authentic Communista Ffolke soingers" too…I wish soingers had never been born in the first place!

Coelacanth05 Aug 2016 5:31 a.m. PST

The correct term is "filk soingers".

I was going to ask Dear Editor to fix the spelliong in the title, but it's kind of late now. grin

It'll be a loing time before we can fix this wreck!

Winston Smith05 Aug 2016 8:25 a.m. PST

Nuke it and start over in a few months?
I'll still feel the same way. grin

I keep seeing Winston as Bluto in Animal House, breaking the earnest folksinger's guitar!

I once played at a folk night in a communist club.

The good humour quotient was not high. Nor, indeed, was the acclaim I received.

In fairness to myself, I'll say it was hard to stand up and provide quality entertainment with a bunch of hardline Stalinists staring at me accusingly.

Tom Lehrer had a number about that,"The Folk Song Army"

Senor Squint. Maybe it was the Trotskyist songs you were singing.
Didn't anybody warn you about ABBA?

At that time my friends and I were performing what is best thought of as Appalachian punk, being old timey Americana played fast and without any skill. I suspect we needed a mine disaster song, ideally with a chorus pointing out the callous venality of the coal company. Which is 'all of them', as is only right.
