I quite liked it – not as good as the last one but not bad. Simon Pegg has injected a lot more humour – I'm not sure that the Trek universe was the best setting for some of it. There are a couple of references to the original which are quite funny.

Things I liked :
1)Spock is more Spock-like, and Bones is more Bones-like. Also Bones is more central to the plot.
2)The alien ships.

Things I found odd :

When Kirk makes his log entries he sounds like Shatner, the rest of the time he doesn't.

Things I didn't like :

1) The "secret weapon" Kirk et al deploy is perhaps the single worst moment of the Trek universe.
2)Kirk's "diversion". Just dreadful.

Oh – and if you've followed the George Takei "they shouldn't tamper with Sulu" angst – to be honest if you blink you'll miss it.

I saw it and didn't like it at all. I was borderline about the start MSTKing it in the theatre which would have been bad form.

I liked the idea of the villain and the big reveal of who he was and how he became what he was.

I still think the casting is spot on. I think Sofia was a little wasted talent in her part as Jayla though. Loved her in Kingsman.

But everything else was just… bad, cliché, formulaic and non-essential nods to old Trek movies. There was no fear of anyone going to get killed at all or some bad consequence of their actions.

And using "The Crew" as this inconvenient "rescue plot" point and them having them mysteriously disappear as if they were shoved in a 4dimension box really confused me. or did Scotty put them in a transporter buffer?

We saw it and went along with the ride. Yes we enjoyed it. Saw no need to MST3K it.

I found that the nods to ST:TOS were a great part of the films charm.

Not interested in any of the reboots.

Captain Gideon26 Jul 2016 7:53 a.m. PST

For myself I liked it but not as much and I thought it could've been better but that's me.

It had good moments and some bad ones but overall it was okay.

Norrins26 Jul 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

I liked it. Of all the reboot films, this is the one I have enjoyed the most. For me personally it felt like a "Star Trek" episode, although I did find Kralls justification to be a bit paper thin.

Sure it has it's plot holes (Krall doesn't remember where his ship crashed??? and you now apply to become a Vice Admiral???) but on the whole I enjoyed it.

Agree with the comments above, the interplay between Spock & McCoy was well done. You can tell Pegg is a fan even if he can't do a Scottish accent!

Martian Root Canal26 Jul 2016 9:12 a.m. PST

I liked it a lot. And I liked the 'secret weapon.' Yes there are plot holes. Welcome to every episode and movie of Star Trek since the beginning. This movie was a ton of fun…and the box office appears to agree.

Who asked this joker26 Jul 2016 11:25 a.m. PST

I was disappointed in the first two. I will likely be disappointed in this one as well.

Cyrus the Great26 Jul 2016 12:12 p.m. PST

I liked it. I go to movies to be entertained, I was!

EXACTLY what my son said. As long as you don't try to retro-fit it, it is a pretty good movie in a universe we know

" not as good as the last one"

What, did it actually kill audience members? Because that's what it would take to be worse than Into Darkness.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP26 Jul 2016 1:19 p.m. PST

So far Darkness is my favourite of the reboots. It was not free of faults grin

jpattern226 Jul 2016 2:19 p.m. PST

Flawed but very enjoyable.

Jpattern +1

I found that if I thought about it too hard I liked it less.

Maybe I think too much ?

Streitax26 Jul 2016 5:58 p.m. PST

Meh, too loud and confusing. Dialogue drowned out, long scenes of 'OK, now people are shooting, ships are crashing, lasers blasting, ummmm, who's on first?' The dialogue between characters still has the old charm and rings true, though, and that was always the best part. Oh yeah, not a credible motivation for the bad guy.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik26 Jul 2016 8:03 p.m. PST

It was a bit fast and furious, but that's to be expected. I was entertained. And one should never underestimate the power of rock & roll even in the year 2260.

As for General Krall's motivations for revenge, I've seen much worse.

Kirk, Spock and McCoy were true to character, including Kirk's spontaneous motorbike ploy: link

The new star trek movie?
You mean nemesis? Not very new any more. But it is the newest.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP27 Jul 2016 5:51 a.m. PST

Nemesis ?

Wasn't that a ST-TNG movie ? evil grin

The last proper ST movie was The Undiscovered Country (although I guess a case could be made for the first 30 minutes of Generations)

I'm trying to approach the new Trek universe with an open mind – as much as I can.

haywire27 Jul 2016 10:02 a.m. PST

After thinking about it more it, my main opinion comes down to this…

I am sick to death of Deus Ex Machina "Virus" endings to Sci Fi movies. If I was 20 years younger and hadn't seen so many I would have thought it was fun. But seriously, there was no imagination in it at all, I even called the song.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP27 Jul 2016 10:15 a.m. PST

To me it was fun watching!

Garand27 Jul 2016 10:31 a.m. PST

If it was worse than Into Darkness, then it must be pretty bad.

Not going to see it in the Theaters, but will probably end up seeing it on DVD (my dad is a movie junkie, and I often watch movies with him). BTW, mixing in modern music into an SF movie is such a bad cliche, and doesn't belong IMHO.

Damon.

PaddySinclair27 Jul 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

You can tell Pegg is a fan even if he can't do a Scottish accent!

His accent is actually pretty spot on for what he was aiming at, Central Belt erring towards Edinburgh. Notthing like Doohan's accent, but that wasn't Scots at all, certainly not in the movies and beyond.

PaddySinclair27 Jul 2016 11:26 a.m. PST

A solid 8/10 I thought. Best of the reboots so far and a lot more Trekky than the other two.

Krall's motivations probably are mostly on the cutting room floor. There's hints throughout, but the gist of it IMO is that the process he's using to sustain himself meant he lost a lot of himself in doing so, with certain things becoming his focus (he said as spoiler free as possible).

PaddySinclair27 Jul 2016 11:32 a.m. PST

But seriously, there was no imagination in it at all, I even called the song.

You mean the one that featured very heavily in the first trailers and everyone was saying what's this obsession the reboot franchise has with the Beastie Boys, that one? The one that has a perfectly plot justified reason for its inclusion, plus a suitable callback acknowledgement…

It didn't seem like anything special to me. More like they took a TV episode and made it a 2 hour movie. To me, if you are going to make it a movie then it better be a little more special than run of the mill redux.

At least in my theater, the first part of the film was very dark and it was hard to see what was going on inside the ships. The action scenes jumped back and forth pretty quickly maybe trying to create some sense of chaos and urgency but I found it a little annoying.

The dialog between main characters is pretty good.

The diversion and secret weapon were kind of lame.

The Enterprise destruction and crash – been there and done that already.

The villain reveal was pretty good.

In the end I wouldn't (and didn't) go out of my way to see it.

Mithmee27 Jul 2016 12:07 p.m. PST

Going tomorrow with the eldest daughter.

The last proper ST movie was The Undiscovered Country (although I guess a case could be made for the first 30 minutes of Generations)

TOS was just the campy warmup for propper trek (TNG/DS9)

Mithmee28 Jul 2016 6:51 p.m. PST

Saw it this afternoon and it was good.

Though James still keeps on crashing his ships, though that is because he keeps getting them shot to pieces.

But this one is worth seeing.

Needs more lens flare.

Ow! Stop throwing things!

Mardaddy29 Jul 2016 10:18 p.m. PST

Just got back from the theater. I liked it – but the "diversion" was just short of ruining the entire movie for me. Ridiculous.

I will be buying the DVD.
