A moments silence if you please for the nation's most famous fire fighters. Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble & Grubb. All gone. Their creator, Gordon Murray, passed away yesterday aged 95. A good obit in The Times for a man who felt that he should try to encourage young people to show kindness to others. Much of his view was shaped by his experiences on the Normandy beaches. He was not, however, overly sentimental. All but one of his puppets did actually meet their end in a bonfire. Norman felt that they were working pieces and he had no desire for people to see them decay. The sole survivor is believed to be a soldier from Pippin Fort. This brave warrior was obviously SAS material and he is rumoured to be living in a shoe box in Stamford, Lincs. BBC obit here link |
