My daughter shared the "comic" from theoatmeal.com/comics/plane and of course I had to check it out on Snopes. Something grand about Roddenberry emerges by the fact that I had never heard of this heroic story before, which means that he was self effacing which means that he had greater character than I was aware of.

Heard about this one on NPR. The guy that writes the Oatmeal read it on the air. Fabulous story.

Maybe this is where the franchise has learned to crash so many of the Enterprise starships.

I met Roddenberry several times in the 70's. He came to a lot of conventions back then and he did a college lecture circuit. In the 80's I went on a cruise that featured a lot of Star Trek cast members and while he and his wife were on the cruise, he was pretty sick by then and seldom left his cabin. He was always very nice at these events and often stayed longer that he was required to answering questions and doing autographs.
