I get most of my music on Youtube nowadays. As I was looking for a video of actor Patrick Wilson's rendition of the King's "Can't Help Falling in Love" to embed in my most recent movie review:link I came across a cover of the song for an Extra chewing gum commercial by American Idol Season 10 3rd-place finalist Haley Reinhart, with whom I admit I was briefly smitten after watching her rendition of The Animals's "House of the Rising Sun": YouTube link. After "rediscovering" her on Youtube I noticed that she and her fellow season 10 musical soulmate Casey Abrams have been occasionally singing with a "collective" (I know it sounds a tad communist, but it's a loose association) of musicians called "Postmodern Jukebox" started by Scott Bradlee back in 2011 that has become a Youtube sensation. What PMJ does is to rearrange various contemporary (1990's and after) pop music into classic old school genres, from vintage Jazz Age to Blues and anything in between. Granted, there are some misses due to certain music today do not translate well into past musical stylings, but they are entertaining for the most part and the videos are invariably well done and evoke the era they're trying to recreate. Watched Haley do Black Hole Sun – my, isn't she scenic? Wonderful performance too. |

I thought she outdid even her covers of 'Seven Nation Army' and 'Creep' with 'Black Hole Sun.' Haley can switch gears effortlessly between her soft jazzy voice and her deep throaty growl that comes from the gut. She grew up listening to classic rock even though she studied jazz and blues. She was the first Idol contestant to cover a Zeppelin song: youtu.be/UJ2XjvjNWqM And this was her comeback after getting ripped by Randy and JLo for an earlier performance (the same night) that would have brought weaker contestants to tears: youtu.be/WgSk75vVw4k |

She should have won it – great style, great voice. |

Yep, Haley is PMJ's secret weapon. Their songs that don't feature her are great too, but that lady adds star power. |
