This family left their booking a little late and found no room at the inn :

Good on the hotel, says I, not wanting to cancel others who'd booked well in advance.

Concur.

I don't know that the hotel's reaction is out of the ordinary -- the article didn't say that the Royal Family or the French government pushed back, just that they requested and were denied. It did a good job at avoiding discussion of that part of the issue, which people would think is important.

Some places will bump some people for others. Some will not.

I would guess that finance is more of a motivator than ethics. Like people who stay at Motel 6, people who stay at a five-star boutique hotel probably frequent five-star boutique hotels. Unlike Motel 6, you probably don't get a frequent stay club card … they know who you are. Booting a guest (even an infrequent guest one who may have connections to your frequents guests) for a one/two/maybe three time visitor isn't good business sense.

I am also assuming that a boutique five star hotel would have the sense to contact its frequent customers about the oncoming rush for rooms associated with such an event. If Marriott can figure it out for me, one would hope …

Still smarting from Waterloo I think, since when have the Franchisees spoken 'ethical' ;)
