Just heard the news. Usually these things don't effect me much, but this one is different. His album Diamond Dogs was the first record that started my interest in music. RIP. |

Strange thing to wake up to the BBC news talking about Bowie…"must be an arts story about the new album" I think…then it slowly dawns on me that this is an obituary. And whilst I wasn't a fan of every one of his changes of direction, I did listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" this morning – what an album, and for me his very highest triumph. Gone far too soon. |

Listening to his older stuff the other day on a walk. He's one of those artists that I always thought would be there, surprising us with a new album every now and then. Rest in peace Ziggy. You were one of the best! |

One of the first songs of David Bowie's that I became familiar with was 1969's "Space Oddity". It was in 1971, I was in 1st Grade, and it was during the height of the U.S. Apollo space program, which highly fascinated me at the time. The song immediately clicked with me, and I remember playing the 45 single (which I believe was my brother's) a lot on the stereo we had then. I heard some of his other hits in bits and pieces in the background (i.e., someone's car radio, etc.), but the next song that I became more familiar with was 1975's "Fame" and "Golden Years", which the pop radio stations that I listened to played because of their commercial appeal. And in the early music video era, I saw his imaginative and cutting edge videos for "Fashion" and "Ashes to Ashes" on shows like NBC's 'The Midnight Special' and USA's 'Night Flight'. And, of course, his "Let's Dance" album and his duo for "Dancing in the Street" with Rolling Stone Mick Jagger made the experience and sound of the '80s memorable and fun. He was the epitome of "creative genius". Godspeed, Mr. Bowie, and thank you very, very much. |

One of the greats and I am stunned at his passing and he was only a few years older than me. He was one of the true icons of Rock, Pop and alternative Pop and Rock music. On top of that he was a top notch actor. Some of my favorites are of course Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Hunger, Labyrinth, and The Prestige where Bowie played Nikola Tesla. As an artist and song writer Bowie was never afraid to try different things and reinvented himself a number of times. Some of his best music never got air time in my opinion. Rest well Major Tom. |

Yep, Major Tom was my first conscious awareness of David Bowie. I have always enjoyed that one. He played the Goblin King opposite a very young Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth. I've always enjoyed that movie in large part because of David Bowie's role. |

One, of a handful, of truly influential persons in rock music. Bowie constantly reinvented himself and stayed on the cutting edge of rock music. One of my favorite memories is when he hosted The Midnight Special, featuring The 1980 Floor Show. One of many favorite songs: YouTube link R.I.P. A LEGEND has passed! |

Hard to think of someone whose creativity has influenced modern music more, Stevie Wonder probably comes close but the changes in direction were amazing. So glad the last album was up to his best. |

Terrible news, I heard about it just before leaving for work. The radio station we played paid tribute to Him throughout the day. The stars do look very different today. • |

Not into music at all but this still came as a shock. Lots of comment about his contribution on the radio but time and again people who met him said he was a perfect gent. RIP |

I heard about it on the way to work this morning and at first thought it was one of those Willie Nelson is dead type stories and it would turn out to be a hoax. Now the couple of music videos from his new album make all too much sense now. A true giant is someone who even though he is dying, makes a last statement to leave behind. |
